Beatrice, a Fine and Sporting Oil Painter specialising in equestrian portraiture and landscape painting, elegantly dovetails the traditional and contemporary.

By combining the techniques of Old Masters, along with her own, she creates a sense of timeless gravitas in her work so that it may be passed down generations and enjoyed for hundreds of years to come.

Based on the rural Hampshire/Sussex border, her work is quintessentially English. Driven by the value she places on the importance of British heritage, her fascination for the horse, the landscape and the transience and nuance of light. She creates rural scenes brimming with classic charm. By studying horses at polo matches, race meets etc, she collates drawn, photographic and videographic studies which contribute to her working process back in her studio.

Even though tradition is at the heart of her work, a contemporary edge is brought to her paintings by the subtle inclusion of fluid brush marks and unexpected daubs of brighter colours such as greens or purples, reds or pinks, which are only visible on close inspection as they are interwoven into the fine make up of her paintings, yet add a vitality and Impressionistic flavour to the finished piece. This sensitivity to her work allows her to lace the traditional spirit of sporting art with a freshness and bring it into the twenty-first century.

With a BA in History wherein she specialised in the eighteenth century sporting art and architecture of West Sussex, she tackles her work with an interdisciplinary approach by studying the techniques of the Old Masters and principles of the Picturesque - which are focussed on conveying the complexity of nature - and applying them in order to bring a sensitivity and atmosphere to her work.

Beatrice has a passion for Georgian architecture and paintings and thus much of her inspiration is derived from such. Church buildings and country houses often appear in the landscapes of her work, bringing a sense of weight to the composition, and evoking Britain’s rich rural architectural and social history. In certain scenes, such as portraits of racehorses or hunt horses with landscapes behind, Beatrice implements topographical adjustments - a technique she was first exposed to when studying Caravaggio’s depictions of Venice - in order to achieve balanced and harmonious compositions whilst retaining the recognizability of the setting.

For her equine and canine portraits, she combines techniques applied in traditional portrait painting, which manifest on the canvas in apparent spontaneity but are executed with prodigious effort.

Beatrice take on commissions, with patrons including Cowdray Park Polo Club and international clients. Beatrice is represented by galleries in America and the UK and selected works have been exhibited in Westminster, Hampshire and Warwickshire.
